Makinta Kuriri primary school is gradually returning to normal, as students arrived for the morning assembly, sat at their new desks and excitedly awaited instructions from their teacher. Laughing and chatting, the students were ready to learn. This has not been the case for the past two years.

Nigeria joined the rest of the world in commemorating thus year’s World Environment Day (WED). Several activities were organised across the country including the main event held in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory. WED is the biggest annual event for positive environmental action - under the theme “Connect with Nature”, this year’s activities invited citizens of the world to think about how we are part of nature and how intimately we depend on it.

State Government representatives have expressed gratitude to UNDP for efforts being implemented aimed at helping victims of the insurgency in their States. The representatives from Borno, Adamawa, Yobe and Gombe States visited a training centre in Kaduna where selected IDPs are undergoing training in automotive mechanics.
UNDP supported solar-powered agro-processing plant adding value to cassava in Buruku, Benue State

During the project site visit Mbateva-mbatyou community demonstrated the operational process of converting raw cassava to garri using solar-powered equipment. Five main stages are involved in the process: peeling, girding, compressing, frying, and filtering. All the stages, excluding compressing and frying, are operated by solar-powered equipment. The equipment, which is in full operation is easing the work and resources required to turn raw cassava into garri, one of the most popular sources of starch in the country.

While in the State, the team met with the Honourable Commissioner of Economic Planning, Mr. Mark Okoye who solicited for more of UNDP’s support especially, towards the development of a Regional Economic Blueprint for the South East, a priority initiative agreed upon by the South East Governors Forum. The regional blueprint will be aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and UNDP"s new Country Programme.
UNDP hands over rehabilitated infrastructure to communities in North-East Nigeria

In Borno, resources were allocated for the procurement of construction material for 150 houses in Ngwom of Mafa LGA. A community that was totally devastated in the insurgency is now in the process of recovery – it is also a pilot community of UNDP’s integrated community stabilization package. In Yobe, a water borehole that from which over 4,000 residents will benefit was constructed in Biriri village in Tarmuwa LGA and two blocks of a primary school were constructed specifically for IDP children in Damaturu.
