INEC demonstrate permanent voter cards

Aug 5, 2013

With the assistance of ongoing technical support from the Democratic Governance for Development (DGD II) project, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is finalizing its preparations for the commencement of the voter registration process.

A key aspect of the process as defined in the INEC strategic programme of actions is the development of new permanent voter cards, which will provide security provisions to address voter fraud. The cards are currently being produced by INEC on schedule, and in August, DGD supported an INEC conference where key stakeholders were presented with a demonstration of the new card.

The Experience-sharing and Confidence Building Conference on the Voter Registration & Continuous Voter Registration, which was attended by 50 participants from major electoral stakeholders including media, civil society and the National Orientation Agency, demonstrated INEC’s commitment to a transparent process and clearly demonstrated the security protocols in place to ensure credible voting.

DGD II is a joint donor funded project managed by UNDP in support of deepening democracy in Nigeria. The project is funded with contributions from the European Commission (EC), the UK Department for International Development (DFID), the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
