This intervention was implemented in Maiduguri Borno State following a cost-sharing agreement between UNDP and the Government of Switzerland, through the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) with the goal of supporting of supporting ongoing efforts to implement the Waste Management Emergency Response for IDP Host Communities in Maiduguri.

The programme was designed to support the overall strategic objectives of the 2017 Nigeria Humanitarian Response Plan by addressing waste accumulations and illegal dumpsites which, when cleaned, will reduce vector breeding sites and minimise the health risks in the host communities while providing a source of livelihoods.

The objectives of the project was to provide early recovery support to the most vulnerable through emergency employment. Priority was given to; cleaning up of waste accumulation in dumping sites and drainage systems in Maiduguri; reducing risk of disease and illness in host communities in Maiduguri; and promoting sustainable durable solutions within the humanitarian response framework which contribute to community harmony and to enhance the capacity develop of government.
